The best known chewing gum company in this country and the world's largest manufacturer of chewing gum is Wrigley's. William Wrigley was Senior soap manufacturer in Philadelphia. After his son had to leave school early he climbed 1890 in the company of his father and showed lots of sales talent. His greatest success was the sale of chewing gum, so that he his own chewing gum factoryin 1890. 1892, he produced Wrigley's Spearmint, and a year later, Juicy Fruit, the most popular variety quickly to America.
Already in 1921 there is a report from Germany of great chewing gum demand in Koblenz. It was mainly imported chewing gum consumed in the shops of the former occupying powers available.
Bubble gums, the chewing gum which can blow balloons, emerged in 1928. Walter E. Diemer, a simple accountant who did not understand much of chemistry, but as a passionate chewer like to experiment, we have to thank for this invention. He found out that the elasticity of chewing gum by the addition of certain dyes can be increased so that with the new chewing gum huge bubbles can be made.
